Malaysia Encourages More Homeowners to Adopt Solar Energy
Malaysia continues to encourage the adoption of renewable energy through rooftop solar initiatives. For homeowners looking to manage electricity expenses, the Solar Accelerated Transition Action Programme (Solar ATAP) and the Sustainable Rebate & Incentive Assistance (SuRIA) Home programme are two important developments to understand.
According to SEDA Malaysia, Solar ATAP commenced on 1 January 2026, providing a framework for eligible consumers to generate solar electricity for their own use while allowing surplus electricity to be exported to the grid under the programme’s applicable terms.
What Is Solar ATAP?
Solar ATAP is a government initiative designed to encourage rooftop solar installations in Peninsular Malaysia.
The programme allows eligible TNB customers to generate electricity from their own solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Solar generation can help reduce the amount of electricity purchased from the grid, particularly when household electricity consumption coincides with daylight hours.
The programme has specific eligibility, technical assessment, installation and application requirements. Homeowners should confirm their eligibility and proposed system capacity before proceeding.
What Is the SuRIA Home Rebate?
The SuRIA Home initiative provides a one-time cash rebate for eligible domestic customers who install solar PV systems under Solar ATAP.
According to SEDA Malaysia’s published programme information, the rebate is calculated at RM600 per kWac, subject to a maximum of RM3,000.
Key conditions include:
- The applicant must be an eligible Malaysian citizen and domestic customer.
- The installation must satisfy the programme’s applicable Solar ATAP requirements.
- The customer must not have previously received a cash rebate under the earlier SolaRIS programme.
- The solar system must be successfully commissioned by 31 December 2026, or before the available rebate allocation is exhausted, whichever occurs first.
- All other programme terms and conditions must be met.
The programme operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Homeowners should verify the latest allocation status and eligibility requirements through the official authorities.
How Much Could an Eligible Homeowner Receive?
The following examples illustrate the rebate calculation, assuming the stated capacity qualifies under the programme.
| Declared installed capacity | Illustrative rebate |
|---|---|
| 2 kWac | RM1,200 |
| 3 kWac | RM1,800 |
| 5 kWac | RM3,000 |
| 6 kWac | RM3,000 maximum |
The rebate is subject to the official programme terms. It should not be treated as an automatic discount on the contractor’s quotation or a guaranteed payment before eligibility is confirmed.
Is Rooftop Solar Suitable for Your Home?
The benefits of a solar installation depend on several factors, including:
- Monthly electricity consumption and billing history.
- Roof orientation, available space and shading.
- Roof condition and installation requirements.
- Household electricity usage during daylight hours.
- Solar system cost and expected maintenance requirements.
- Applicable programme conditions and the approved system design.
A properly sized system should be based on the household’s actual electricity consumption rather than simply installing the largest system that fits on the roof.
Why Consider Solar Now?
For eligible homeowners, the current incentive may improve the financial case for adopting solar energy. However, the stated commissioning deadline means installation planning, technical approvals, equipment availability and project scheduling need careful attention.
Customers should avoid making decisions based solely on a promised rebate or estimated savings figure. A proper assessment should consider the total installation cost, expected solar generation, electricity consumption and applicable export arrangements.
